YUMA, Ariz. (AP) — An elderly Yuma man has been killed in an apartment fire.

Yuma firefighters say the apartment of 72-year-old Ernest Horton and 56-year-old Harland Rowland caught fire late Tuesday night.

Rowland awoke to heavy smoke and tried to fight the fire with an extinguisher and reach Horton in his bedroom.

But Rowland had to run out of the apartment and call 911 because the smoke was so bad.

Firefighters put out the fire and found an unresponsive Horton in his bedroom and were unable to revive him. An autopsy is being conducted.

Rowland was being treated for complications from smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
