As college football’s bowl games come to an end with tonight’s Bowl Championship Series title game between Alabama and Louisiana State (6:30 p.m., ESPN), the question asked last Tuesday of Safeway shoppers in Sun City West was, “Are you watching any of the college bowl games?” followed by which one(s) and who are your favorite football teams.

“All of them that I can get my hands on,” said Lloyd DeMartini of Sun City West. “I’m in a pool, 26 games, OK?

“Right now, I’m 18 (wins) and 5 (losses).” said DeMartini, who said his favorite team is Stanford. “Unfortunately, they lost. They beat the spread.”

Tom Joy of Sun City West was in his golf car with his granddaughter, Sarah Hohman, 9, of Cleveland. He said he is watching the games and doesn’t have a favorite because nobody from the East Coast is playing, although Boston College is his favorite team.

“Is there anyone else besides the New England Patriots?” he asked, a reference to his favorite NFL team.

Sun City West resident Jerry Olson said he is watching some of them. “Depending on the mood I’m in.” His favorite team is the Minnesota Gophers, who are not playing in a bowl game.

“I watched Michigan State and whoever they played (Georgia in the Outback Bowl),” said Sharon Behen of Sun City West.  “They beat them by a field goal. At halftime, they were down 16 to nothing.

“They came back and tied it. Each team kept tying it. Kept going into overtime,” she said.

Behen, a Michigan native, said her favorite team is Michigan State, which kicked a field goal in the third overtime to win the game.

She said she also watched another bowl game.

“Oh yes, yes — I surely am,” said Phil Jansen of Sun City West when asked about watching.

As for favorite team, “Michigan, because my father went to Michigan years ago. And when we lived (there), they had a home in a suburb of Chicago and occasionally during football season, my dad and my mother and yours truly, we would drive up to Ann Arbor and spend the weekend there and one day we were sitting in the end zone and Michigan in their bowl, they were the first ones to dig down and put a pole in; any rate, they were playing Northwestern.

“All of the plays ... we were about halfway up in the end, and all of the goal play was right down below us, (with) either team,” he said. “That was a lot of fun.”

Martin Hernandez of Surprise said, “Yes, the BCS (Fiesta Bowl) and the Rose Bowl. That’s the only ones I’ve watched so far.” His favorite team is Arizona State, which lost in the Nevada Bowl.

“Oh, yes,” said Margie McKinzie of Surprise. “I watched the Fiesta Bowl and then the Insight the other day and whatever comes up this week.”

The Arizona Cardinals are her favorite football team.

Sun City West resident Don Cuzzetto was with his grandson, Miles Blakley, 12, of Surprise. “Absolutely,” Cuzzetto said. “We watched two yesterday, the Fiesta Bowl, the Rose Bowl and then we watched a bunch last week.”

Cuzzetto and his grandson said they root for the Oregon Ducks.

Roger Fishbach of Sun City West said he is watching most of the bowl games and his favorite team, Minnesota, is not in any of them. “They are not winning much, lately.”

“Dang right.” said Kelly Dhainin of Sun City West. “I try to watch all of them.”

The Iowa Hawkeyes are his favorite team. “They played and lost in the Insight Bowl to Oklahoma.”
