Time was when the words hospital and dining didn’t go together.

Today, though, the cafeteria at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center in Sun City West is whetting the appetites of visitors, staff and members of the community looking for a healthy, tasty meal.

Hospital officials say area residents are welcome to enjoy culinary creations for breakfast, lunch or dinner at the newly remodeled cafeteria, located on the main level of the nonprofit hospital, at 14502 Meeker Blvd.

Joshua Fels, culinary and nutrition services director for the medical center, said 95 percent of the food served is made in-house from scratch every day. To keep up with the food standard, the cafeteria recently underwent an extensive remodel.

Fels said new flooring, pendant lighting, music and booths help transform the hospital cafeteria into a community dining destination, which is now open to visitors, staff and the public looking for a meal at a reasonable price.

Staff celebrated the grand opening of the renovated cafeteria with a ribbon cutting earlier this month. The project was partially funded through Better Together, an annual employee giving campaign where 100 percent of the contributions made go to programs supported through Banner Health Foundation and Sun Health Foundation.

“It’s important that we give back to the facility that we work at. If we do that, we can make a difference,“ said Joanna Karas, Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center’s Better Together chairwoman. “It makes you feel good to know that this is something you contributed to as an invested, engaged employee.”

The 2012 Better Together Campaign at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center raised $65,333, providing funds to renovate the cafeteria with new tables, chairs, booths, lighting and Wi-Fi. Next, Karas said employees hope to add new furniture and shade sails to the patio space at the cafeteria with funds from the 2013 Better Together Campaign, which kicked off on Sept. 5.

The cafeteria is open daily:

• Breakfast, 6:30 to 10 a.m.

• Lunch, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

• Dinner, 4:30 to 10 p.m.

• The Daily Grind coffee shop is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
