The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office had no additional information this morning regarding a shooting in Sun City on Friday night when authorities said an 85-year-old man shot his 81-year-old wife.
MCSO spokesman Christopher Hegstrom said Saturday that George Sanders was being held at the Fourth Avenue Jail on an attempted homicide charge.
Hegstrom said Virginia Sanders was taken to a hospital for treatment after being shot in the head Friday night at her home in the 10000 block of Wheatridge Drive, near Bell Road and Del Webb Boulevard.
MCSO released no information on the circumstances surrounding the shooting and had no update on the victim's condition this morning.
“He was a very kind man, very good neighbors.” said Jarvis Van Klompenberg. “He treated (her) with a lot of respect, and he would play the piano for her, play the guitar and sing to her.
“He would do whatever he could. He’d take her for a stroll in a stroller. He’s been very kind to her for many years.”
Van Klompenberg said Virginia Sanders had multiple sclerosis since 1971 and was wheechair-bound.
The Van Klompenbergs were home but didn’t hear anything Friday night. “Just heard the commotion after the fact,” he said.
“He left golf to be with her, an avid golfer, a good golfer. He was very dedicated to her.”
