Warner to start preseason finale

Whisenhunt wants veteran QB to run first-team offense

DAILY NEWS-SUN

Kurt Warner will start at quarterback Friday against Denver in the Cardinals' final preseason game.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt said the decision is due to a disparity in playing time in the exhibition season. Matt Leinart has taken about twice as many snaps as Warner and Whisenhunt wants Warner to work more with the starters.

The decision also comes three days after a national report, citing an unnamed team source, said Warner will be named the starter for the regular season. The report came after Leinart threw three interceptions in a preseason game against Oakland last Saturday and posted a quarterback rating of 2.8. Leinart will play Friday, possibly with the starters, depending on how long Whisenhunt decides to go with the No. 1 offensive line.

Just as the two quarterbacks alternated with the first unit in training camp, "Kurt hasn't got a lot of snaps with the first line, with the first receivers in a game situation," Whisenhunt said.  "That's what we're trying to accommodate with this."
The Cardinals open the regular season Sept. 7 at San Francisco.
