The Peoria Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect who stole an SUV from the parking lot of the Diamond Shamrock near 83rd Avenue and Cactus Road at about 12:45 p.m. May 26.

A man who stopped at the gas station was not able to start his vehicle and called a family member for help, police said Tuesday. Unable to fix the problem, the man transferred all his belongings over to the family member’s SUV, police said, and included in those items were approximately 20 firearms.

Once the guns were in the SUV, the suspect, who was sitting on a nearby wall, got into the driver’s seat and drove off.

Before this incident, the suspect walked into the convenience store twice, police said. Surveillance video shows the suspect walk in once to talk to the clerk about change for the pay phone. The second time he bought a bottle of water.

He is described as a light skinned Hispanic man about 20-30 years old, 5 foot 6 to 5 foot 8, 140-160 pounds, dark hair with a crew-cut hairstyle. He has a large colorful tattoo on his left forearm and a smaller tattoo on the inside of his right forearm, police said.

The stolen vehicle has been recovered, however the firearms have not been found.

If anyone recognizes the suspect, they are urged to contact detectives at 623-773-7045 or call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
