Youngtown considers property tax

Daily News-Sun

The Youngtown Common Council will explore whether to ask the residents to vote on instituting the town’s first property tax that would potentially help fund more public safety services, official said today.

Maricopa County Assessor Keith Russell and his executive senior adviser, Lesley Kravitz, are making a presentation to the council at Thursday’s regular council meeting about the potential tax.

Mayor Michael LeVault said he and the council asked the assessor to brief them and residents about the tax.

“We’re facing budget problems just like other municipalities with what the state gives us,” he said. “So we’re trying to be proactive and see if this is something the town what to move forward with it.”

Any property tax would need voter approval. The earliest that could come would be May.
