Glendale misses out on 2012 Super Bowl

Mayor holds out hope for 2013 game

Daily News-Sun

Glendale will not be hosting another Super Bowl until after 2012.

The city and University of Phoenix Stadium were passed over by NFL owners Tuesday for the 2012 game. Owners voted instead to host Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis.

This is the second year in a row that the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee was passed up by owners in favor of another host. Last season North Texas was awarded the 2011 Super Bowl over both Arizona and Indianapolis.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said that Indianapolis's new Lucas Oil Stadium was a deciding factor for the owners in the decision to award the game to the central Indiana city.

Also the city has promised to build a practice facility for the Super Bowl that will then be turned over to the community.

Earlier this year, Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee Chairman Mike Kennedy asked for Glendale City Council's blessing in bidding for the next two available Super Bowls. The 2012 game was the first chance for Arizona, so there is hope for the 2013 bid.

Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs said she was not surprised by the out come of the vote.

"This was somewhat expected," she said. "Indianapolis has a beautiful stadium being built. They were deserving."

"I fully expect that we will get the vote next year," Scruggs said.

"While we are disappointed not to be hosting Super Bowl XLVI, Arizona remains one of the premier Super Bowl destinations." said Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee Chairman Mike Kennedy.  "Super Bowl XLII proved that Arizona is an ideal host region, and we are confident that the world's largest single day sporting will return to the Grand Canyon State in the near future.  Congratulations to Indianapolis for being awarded Super Bowl XLVI; it is a very deserving host, and we wish them success."

Glendale hosted Super Bowl XLII this past February.

Super Bowl XLII at University of Phoenix Stadium was the most-watched game in the history of the NFL.

According to a study released last month, February's game generated $500.6 million in direct and indirect spending by visitors and organizations who came to Arizona for the event.

The economic impact study was conducted by the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University.

Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee Chairman Mike Kennedy and Host Committee President Bob Sullivan joined Arizona Cardinals President Michael Bidwill in making Arizona's case for Super Bowl XLVI today.

Representing Glendale was City Manager Ed Beasley.
