West Valley lines up events for Fire and Safety Week

The following is a list of events around the West Valley for Fire and Safety Week.

• Sun City Fire District

The Health, Safety, Business and Fire Prevention Expo is from 8 a.m. to noon Monday at the Sundial Recreation Center Auditorium.

Inside the auditorium, more than 100 vendors will offer free consultations, prize drawings and health screenings. There will be entertainment provided by disc jockey Robert Wilson. The fire district events will be outside with two fire vehicles and free food provided by Fire Up Freedom. The Sundial Recreation Center is at 14801 N. 103rd Ave.

• Sun City West

The Fire District of Sun City West, the Sun City West Sheriff’s Posse and the Recreation Centers of Sun City West are co-sponsoring the Fire and Life Safety Day Oct. 9.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the R.H. Johnson Recreation Center Social Hall, 19803 R.H. Johnson Blvd.

The fire district also will sponsor an event at the Cross River Community Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 11. The park is at 117th Avenue and Williams Drive.

Flu and pneumonia shots will be available to all residents. Residents must provide a valid insurance card on the day of the event. Free blood pressure screenings will also be provided.

Free food and beverages will be at both events along with giveaways for children and adults. Fire district T-shirts and Sheriff Joe Arpaio pink boxers will be sold at both events.

Fire district and sheriff’s posse apparatus will be on display. Free vehicle identification number etchings will be performed by the sheriff’s posse Oct. 9.

• Glendale

Residents of Glendale are invited to the 26th annual Fire Prevention Day and Parade beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The parade, sponsored by Southwest Gas, starts at 52nd and Glendale avenues and will end at Murphy Park. Parade participants will include fire vehicles, bands, clowns, scouts and others. Food vendors, bounce houses, the Glendale Fire kiddie train ride, a static display of fire apparatus and safety information booths will be in Murphy Park.

• Peoria

The Peoria police and fire departments will host the 12th annual G.A.I.N. Public Safety Night from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at Rio Vista Community Park, 8866 W. Thunderbird Road.

The free community event will feature emergency vehicles and equipment on display and safety organizations of all types. There also will be free bouncy activities for kids.

G.A.I.N. was started in 1998 as a weather-friendly alternative to National Night Out, which is in August and is designed to bring the community together to keep Peoria a safe, family-friendly community.

• Surprise

The Surprise Police Department will have G.A.I.N. Night festivities from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 25, just east of the Surprise Aquatic Center, 15831 N. Bullard Ave.

Along with tips on safe trick-or-treating for kids, residents will enjoy police demonstrations, vehicle ID etching, emergency vehicle displays, raffle prizes from local merchants and food vendors at the free community event. Kids will enjoy face painting, child fingerprint kits and inflatable bounce rides.

• Youngtown

In celebration of Fire Prevention Week, the town will have a G.A.I.N. night from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 11 in Greer Park, 112th and Alabama avenues.

Police and fire department vehicles will be on display, along with desert creatures from White Tank Mountain Regional Park. Raffle prizes from local businesses, police and fire demonstrations and rides for children on a vintage fire engine are among festivities. Free food will also be offered for participants.

A showcase of Youngtown businesses and a voter registration booth will be set up at the free event.
