Fences go up at Mountain View

The Recreation Centers of Sun City has installed new steel security fencing at the Mountain View Recreation Center to eliminate thefts.

The center, which until now had little or no exterior protection, has had ongoing security problems, primarily with break-ins to the pool equipment area and maintenance building.

An alarm system was installed in the area at the end of 2006, but thefts continued.

“Unfortunately, Sun City is no longer the isolated neighborhood it once was,” said RCSC Assistant General Manager Jim Wellman. “It’s still a great neighborhood, but just as homeowners must lock up their homes to keep them secure, RCSC must begin securing its facilities as well.”

Steel fences and gates have been installed around the perimeter of the center, and the main entrance to the pool area has been enclosed with a wall and lockable door.

The east boundary of the property is separated from a group of condominiums by a 4- to 5-foot high brick wall, but Wellman said that if the wall proves to be too low, the RCSC could upgrade the site’s electronic security system.

Wellman said RCSC examined several options for the fencing, including block walls, chain link and steel. The steel fences were a more affordable and aesthetically appropriate option, he said.

Wellman said RCSC is examining security at all its facilities.

RCSC Board of Directors President Denny Nichols said, “RCSC’s chartered clubs at Mountain View and everyone who uses the center can feel secure knowing that their equipment and belongings are more protected now.”
