A 43-year-old Surprise man died of a self-inflicted wound to his neck Tuesday following a traffic stop near the intersection of Desert Oasis and Whitehorn Way, Surprise police said.

At approximately 2:39 a.m., a Surprise police officer pulled over the driver who was wanted for questioning in a domestic violence case that had occurred hours earlier. During the traffic stop, the man brandished a large kitchen knife. The man was ordered to drop the weapon, and the officer subsequently used a Taser on him while he sat in the vehicle.

Despite the officer’s efforts, police said, the man was able to inflict a severe wound to his own neck with the knife.

Police officers rendered first aid on until medical personnel arrived. George Lajeunesse was flown to John C. Lincoln Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. An investigation is continuing.
