The Sun City Fire Department officially has a new chief.

Jim Haner was presented his promotional badge and officially named fire chief at a board meeting Tuesday. He had been serving as interim chief for the last month following the retirement of former Chief Jim Sebert.

Family members were on hand for the short ceremony, which featured Haner's mother, Sandra Merkel, who pinned on his new badge.

Haner thanked his family members and fire personnel for supporting him.

"The family has given me so much support over my career," he said. "There (were) lots of opportunities that I didn't have to be with the family. Thank you doesn't cover it, but thank you."

Fire board members, fire personnel and residents in attendence were pleased with Haner's promotion.

"Thanks to Chief Sebert and the Haner family. You brought about a great man," board member Gloria Powell said.
