Museum welcomes photos that tell Arizona's story

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

The Arizona Historical Society Museum invites the public to submit 19th and 20th century photos of people, places and events that show and tell the story of Arizona.

All submissions will be scanned and returned to their owners. Celebrity judges will consider photographs in five categories: people, landscapes, lifestyles, events and buildings.

"With the start of the new year, many people make resolutions to get organized, and this includes going through scrapbooks and photographs. We know there are great treasures out there to be shared," said Peter Welsh, director pf the Arizona Historical Society Museum at Papago Park.

The winning photos will be exhibited during the museum's second annual Photographs Fair, and all photographs submitted will be added to the museum's permanent archives.

The public is asked to submit historic photos to the Arizona Historical Society Museum, 1300 N. College Ave., Tempe, by Monday. Each photograph must be labeled with the owner's name, the subject and the date. Any additional information that helps tell the story shown in the photo is appreciated. Trophies will be awarded for the first, second and third place winners in each category.

The winning photographs will be displayed at the Arizona Historical Society Photographs Gallery during the Photographs Fair Jan. 24 and for a month thereafter.

The daylong Photographs Fair includes workshops on photo preservation and storage, displays of antique cameras and lectures on photography and is free to the public.

For information, call 480-929-0292, Ext. 180, or e-mail ahstempe@azhs.gov.
