Peoria police, fire issue safety reminders for July 4

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

As the July 4 holiday approaches, the Peoria police and fire departments would like to remind residents of the following:

• Fireworks are illegal in Arizona and you can be arrested for possessing or using them.

• Fireworks are dangerous and can cause serious physical injury.

• Fireworks can and do cause fires each year.

• If you want to see fireworks, be smart and safe by attending an event, such as Peoria's July 4th All-American Festival at the Peoria Sports Complex.

• Let the professionals do the fireworks.

• SHOOTING A GUN INTO THE AIR IS ILLEGAL. Under Arizona's Shannon's Law, if you fire a weapon into the air, it is a felony crime subject to fines and prison. If you see someone using fireworks or shooting guns into the air, call the Peoria Police Department at 623-773-8311 or if it's an emergency, 911.

• Drink plenty of water. About half your body weight in ounces per day is recommended. Waiting until you're thirsty will not provide enough water.

• Start hydrating the day before you head out.

• Watch people when outside for signs of heat stress.

• Avoid the intake of drugs and stimulates, such as coffee, cigarettes, or alcohol, immediately before or after heat exposures. Ask your doctor about any medications you are taking, some don't do well with the heat.

• Restrict people with high blood pressure or heart problems from working or playing in the heat.

• Wear proper clothing. Loose-fitting and light in color and weight. Wearing of hats will help as well.

• Use sunblock and apply often.
