John Jorgensen swam 84 laps of the Bell Recreation Center pool to celebrate his 84th birthday.

The 84 lengths of the pool is 2,100 yards, or the equivalent of 1.3 miles.

Jorgensen regularly exceeds that distance during his daily fitness program. He has been swimming competitively since grade school and continues as a competitive Master swimmer. Jorgensen also serves as a coach of the Sun City Starrs swim team.

Jorgensen also used the 84 laps as preparation for the third annual Arizona Senior Olympics relay event, which will be Saturday at the Bell Recreation Pool.
