Nominations give pet heroes a chance to shine

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. A hero is one who shows courage and strength in a time of a crisis, risking or sacrificing themselves for another.

Many pets have shown heroism and protected or saved their human friends.

Friends of Animal Care & Control's Hero Awards honor these animals for their acts.

FACC is seeking nominations of local pet heroes that have shown their bravery, loyalty and love; who have served their community; and who have overcome great odds to survive.

"For the sixth year in a row, FACC will honor deserving local dogs and cats for acts of heroism, personal survival and service to the community," said Ann Damiano, Hero Awards chairwoman. "We encourage the public to nominate pets for this special honor, so they can be recognized as symbols of the positive impact that animals have on our lives."

The 2008 Heroes will be honored at a gala fund-raising event Nov. 8 at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa in Phoenix.

A dinner, silent auction and live auction are part of the program, along with honoring the hero animals. Each will receive a customized medallion.

Proceeds benefit FACC, a nonprofit organization that raises funds to help cover the costs of many special programs of Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, including spay/neuter events, volunteer programs and extra support for animals in its facilities.

To nominate a hero cat or dog that has acted to protect or save a life, performed services to benefit the community or overcome devastating circumstances to survive and thrive, visit www.azfaccs.org. Nominations are due by Aug. 15.

For information on how to attend the 2008 Hero Awards, or for sponsorship opportunities, visit www.azfaccs.org or call 602-840-2843.
