Learn how to minimize the risk of stroke and the importance of getting help fast. About 795,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke and 143,000 people die from stroke each year in the United States, according to the American Stroke Association. "Knowing the signs and symptoms of stroke are critical. Getting to the hospital immediately after a stroke’s onset provides the best chances for stroke recovery," Johnson said. "The best way to treat a stroke is never to have a stroke at all, and while some stroke risk factors are beyond your control, there are things you can do to lower your risk. Anything you can do to prevent vascular disease, such as not smoking, maintaining a low-fat diet, exercising regularly and controlling your blood pressure and glucose, can be priceless."
