Glendale questioned over land deal

The Arizona Republic reports the Pendergast family originally sold the land near the Cardinals' football stadium to San Diego real-estate investor David Malcolm for $5.5 million. Malcolm then sold the land to the city for $1.1 million above what he paid for it.

The land was previously leased by the city for overflow football game parking and a youth sports complex.

Glendale City Councilwoman Joyce Clark said she will inquire about the timing of the purchases and whether the city could have negotiated directly with the Pendergasts and save the $1.1 million.

Clark said no explanation was given by city staff as to why the Pendergast family had decided to sell the land or why they had not sold it directly to the city.
