Gene Carter, left, of Sun City West and Dick Beck of Sun City chat about Carter's 1926 Model T Ford that's been in his family since it rolled off the assembly line Oct. 8, 1926. He says he had to buy it from his grandfather so as not to anger his siblings.

C.A.R.S. Club, Marines attract attention

About 20 members of the Sun Cities C.A.R.S. Club wheeled out their vintage rides to the Bel Mar Plaza in Surprise Saturday at an event designed to highlight the new center.

Among the candy-colored classics was Sun City Grand resident Dave Kirkel’s 1963 Studebaker GT Hawk. Kirkel said he purchased the car in November as a 60th birthday present for himself.

"I’ve been into old cars … and I always wanted a Studebaker," he said.

Also attending the event was Jerry Bakke, a former Marine and member of the Phoenix Chapter of the 1st Marine Division Association, a group that donates money and supplies to support serving and injured Marines. Bakke said all donations go directly to Marines stationed all around the world. His group is sponsoring a golf tournament Feb. 20 at the Sun City Country Club, with all proceeds going to the organization.

For information, to donate or to register for the tournament, visit www.1stmarinedivisionassociation.org or call 623-535-0064.
