In honor of Independence Day, the Recreation Centers of Sun City West is introducing a new act to its portfolio of entertainment. Voice of the Desert, a four-part, a cappella harmony women's chorus, will entertain at a free concert at 3 p.m. July 4 in Palm Ridge Recreation Center.

The chorus will celebrate 30 years of entertaining and competing in the Valley of the Sun in 2010. Its patriotic repertoire, performed with fine-tuned, harmonized voices, will tap the patriotic spirit as it celebrates America with some of the country's best-loved songs.

The chorus, directed by Sun City West resident Joanna Moyer, has offered solid entertainment at venues throughout the Northwest Valley, in addition to volunteering its harmonies for several fund-raising events.

The chorus has about 30 members and boasts a repertoire that includes 1940s-inspired numbers called "Canteen Memories," a strong list of patriotic tunes, Christmas and other holiday melodies and competition songs. The chorus earned second-place medals in the small chorus division in regional competition this year.

Cantare quartet also will perform on the Fourth of July show. Cantare was named top novice quartet in regional competition in April.

Membership in the chorus is open to women 18 and older who love to sing and entertain. With a commitment to performance, entertainment and competition, all of which require strong singing and choreography skills, the chorus rehearses Mondays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Circle of Peace Church in Peoria.
