City one of two in running for headquarters

Daily News-Sun

Glendale is one of two cities under final consideration for the new headquarters of USA Basketball, National Director of USA Basketball Jerry Colangelo said.

USA Basketball is looking to build a new training facility that will stage year-round signature basketball competitions and festivals, exhibition games, youth instructional programs, skills camps and coaching clinics and conferences throughout the year. Executive offices will also be built as part of the project

As the governing body for basketball in the United States, USA Basketball is responsible for the selection and training of teams that compete in the Olympics and other international and national competitions.

Joining Glendale as a finalist is Louisville, Ky. The pair rose to the top of the selection process after Indianapolis, Las Vegas and Colorado Springs, Colo. - the current home of USA Basketball - were eliminated.

A final decision is expected by July.

Glendale, which became a finalist after USA Basketball conducted a nationwide search, was the only city in Arizona to submit a proposal.

Glendale is home to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, Arizona Cardinals, Phoenix Coyotes, Super Bowl XLII, University of Phoenix Stadium and Jobing.Com Arena.
