ADOT schedules overnight restrictions on Grand Avenue

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

This week the Arizona Department of Transportation began widening U.S. 60 (Grand Avenue) in Surprise.

Crews will widen Grand Avenue to three lanes in each direction and make intersection improvements to ease traffic flow from 99th Avenue to Loop 303. Rubberized asphalt will be used on both new and existing lanes.

ADOT has announced the following nighttime restrictions for this week, ending Friday morning:

Grand Avenue, between Bell Road and Loop 303, will be narrowed to one lane in each direction. This restriction is in effect nightly from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. This will allow crews to establish work zones and accomplish initial work along the roadway.

Business access will be maintained throughout the project, although access points may temporarily change.

As the project moves forward, the contractor plans to maintain two travel lanes in each direction during the day for much of the project, with work requiring single lane restrictions taking place at night. This is an active work zone and the speed limit has been reduced to 35 miles per hour.

Other improvements include additional turn lanes, new signage, improved traffic signals and crosswalks.

This $18 million project is funded by federal Recovery Act dollars. The first phase of the project widened Grand Avenue between 83rd and 99th avenues, southeast of Surprise. The total widening work and other improvements are scheduled for completion in fall 2011.
