GLENDALE, AZ - Authorities have released the names of the suspect and a Glendale detective involved in an officer-involved shooting on Thursday.

According to a Glendale Police Department news release, the suspect who was struck by gunfire is 43-year-old Stephen Wayne Ross.

The detective who fired his weapon was identified as Jim Carlo, an 18-year veteran officer with the Glendale Police Department.

Glendale police said detectives with the Glendale Police Wanted Fugitive Task Force were trying to contact and arrest Ross on felony warrants and related fraud and forgery cases. They said Ross had outstanding warrants for his arrest for dangerous drugs as well as aggravated identity theft and forgery.

Police said Ross was found to have a violent criminal history and a history of fleeing from police.

Police said that during the investigation a handgun was found inside the suspect’s vehicle.

The incident took place in a parking lot at 59th Avenue and Thunderbird Road around 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Police said after his pickup truck was surrounded by task force members’ vehicles, Ross rammed some of the officers’ vehicles and shots were fired at the suspect.

Ross was struck and taken to a Valley hospital where he was declared deceased.

The Glendale detective who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave, standard in any officer-involved shooting.

Glendale police said U.S. Marshals were part of the task force and will not be interviewed until early next week.

Police said the actual number of shooters in the incident cannot be confirmed until those interviews are completed.
