Yuma soldier finalist for NASCAR honor
Comments 0 | Recommend 0YUMA, Ariz. (AP) — An Army National Guard soldier from Yuma has been named a finalist in a contest to have his name on a NASCAR race.
Sgt. Chris Dempsey is one of five finalists in the Crown Royal "Your Name Here" contest and could receive the naming rights to the Cup Series race at Richmond International Raceway on May 1.
Dempsey and four other finalists from other military branches will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Daytona on Friday to participate in a special ceremony to unveil the grand prize winner and will attend the Daytona 500.
Dempsey says he's more excited about the recognition it brings the National Guard than for himself.
The 44-year-old is a full-time Guard soldier who received six medals during a 15-month tour of duty in Afghanistan that ended in April 2008.
