Senate panel delays bill on selecting judges
Comments 0 | Recommend 0PHOENIX (AP) — A Senate committee has delayed a hearing on a bill that would change the way Arizona selects its judges.
The Senate Judiciary Committee had been scheduled to hear the bill on Monday afternoon. Chairman Sen. Jonathan Paton didn't explaining why the bill was being held.
Republican Sen. Jack Harper of Surprise has proposed asking voters to eliminate the nonpartisan commissions that now select judges.
Harper says the system has led to judges who are out of touch. He says judges should be appointed by the governor, confirmed by the Senate and reconfirmed every four years.
Opponents including retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor say Arizona has a model judiciary and worry Harper's proposal would politicize the bench.
