Daily News-Sun

The Sun City Fire District will have a new chief for the first time in two decades next year, as Jim Sebert has announced his plans to retire.

Sebert, who has served as fire chief since 1989, will step down May 31 of next year.

His replacement, Assistant Chief Jim Haner, was announced at the fire district's board meeting Tuesday morning.

Sebert has been working in the field since 1973, when he got started with the fire department in Tucson. In 1975, he began working in the Sun City area, and he has been there ever since.

"I really love what I'm doing here, but it just felt like the timing was right," Sebert said. "The people of Sun City are wonderful, and the department has been a joy to work for. I will miss it a lot."

Haner joined the department in 1987, and Sebert said he expects Haner "will take this department to new heights. There is no doubt in my mind."

The board also announced that Assistant Chief Steve Morrow will retire next May, as well.
