House approves 2 budget bills, delays 2 more
Comments 0 | Recommend 0PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona House on Monday approved two bills aimed at closing next year's big budget deficit.
But lawmakers again delayed action on two key measures for this year's deficit amid concerns about taking on debt.
The House voted 54-3 to raise $22 million in the next fiscal year by raising taxes on non-Arizonans who earn some of their income here.
The House also voted 40-17 to extend the lottery until 2035, a measure required so the state can borrow against future lottery earnings to fill current budget gaps. But lawmakers didn't vote on a separate bill that would authorize such borrowing to raise $450 million along with $300 million from selling and leasing back state buildings.
The Senate last week approved the bills to close $1.2 billion of the state's $1.5 billion deficit.
