A man accused of giving OxyContin to a Glendale teenager who died of a drug overdose has been sentenced to three years in prison, Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas has announced.

The victim, Courtney Sierzchula, died before graduating from Mountain Ridge High School in February 2007. She had been taken to the hospital died from an overdose of OxyContin.

Her mother was featured in TV and radio public service announcements sponsored by the county attorney's office warning parents of the dangers of prescription drug abuse.

According to the probable cause statement filed by Glendale Police, David Ratey, 26, allegedly gave the victim at least one OxyContin tablet the night she overdosed.

In April, a criminal complaint was filed against Ratey.

On Aug. 8, Ratey pleaded guilty to Attempted Transferring Narcotic Drugs to a Minor, a class 3 felony. On Friday,  Ratey was sentenced to three years inprison.

Thomas said: "Our office has made it a priority to prevent prescription drug abuse through tough prosecution and public awareness."
