Santa Cruz County holding tons of seized marijuana
Comments 0 | Recommend 0NOGALES, Ariz. (AP) — There's so much seized marijuana in Santa Cruz County that authorities need three storage facilities just to hold it all.
The Metro Task Force in southern Arizona seized 4,000 pounds of marijuana in just one week.
Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada calls it an overwhelming and serious problem.
Investigators say much of the marijuana is being confiscated from stash houses in Rio Rico halfway between the border and a checkpoint.
Estrada says Rio Rico is an ideal place for smugglers to store their drugs, check on the checkpoint and then attempt to get the drugs to Tucson.
Acting on a tip, agents busted a stash house in Rio Rico a week ago and recovered 2,400 pounds of pot.
