Flag proposal raises fund question
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The decision to display an official Sun City West flag has been handed off to Recreation Centers General Manager Mike Whiting.
On Thursday, the Recreation Centers of Sun City West governing board discussed the parameters for six flags that would hang in various locations around the community on existing flagpoles. Members were inclined to support the concept, but the final hurdle is whether the item can be budgeted, said Lake Westphal, a board member.
The cost of each flag is about $86, for a total of about $516. Whiting will review the expense and try to work it in this year’s budget or hold off on the item until the budget for the following fiscal year is developed.
The flag, which shows an orange and gold setting sun over the words “Sun City West, Arizona,” would not replace the Rec Centers’ official logo, Westphal said. It would, however, serve as a unifying symbol for the community as it would likely be placed at prominent entrances, in front of the Property Owners and Residents Association building and possibly at recreation centers.
Westphal said the majority of residents who have seen the flag’s logo approve of the idea.
“It seems to be getting a lot of acceptance,” he said.
Also on Thursday, bylaw revisions separating the bowling and golf divisions were unanimously approved.
The revisions allow for seniors from neighboring communities to participate in rec centers bowling leagues and open bowling, though residents will have first choice at bowling times, said Karyl Brandvold, board secretary and Bowling Committee chair.
She said a drop in bowling revenue was the reason to seek outside players.
Finally, the board approved a health insurance package for association staff for the 2010 calendar year not to exceed $1,077,747. Ernie Prindle, chief financial officer and Earl Mackert, insurance subcommittee chair, are negotiating with insurance providers to secure a final cost and exact benefits, but both said they believe the final cost would be within budget.
