Dysart begins wide range of summer youth classes

The Dysart Unified School District announces its lineup of community education enrichment classes.

Participants must register prior to the first class by calling 623-876-7979 or 623-876-7056, in person atthe Dysart Education Center, 15802 N. Parkview Place or using the online registration program at www.dysart.org/communiyed.

Dates, times and fees for courses can be found online.

• Track: Learn the fundamentals of track in a small group setting and develop the necessary skills to improve athletic performance. Classes are 7 to 8:30 a.m. Saturday mornings at Valley Vista High School. $55 for 5 weeks. Boys and girls ages 8 to 18. Summer Session 1 is Saturday through June 27. Summer Session 2 is July 9 through Aug. 6.

• Growing Young Musicians: Get a hands-on learning approach for strings, percussion, melodic percussion, and winds. Students will get to "pet" instruments in the PCM petting zoo, learn the basics of reading music through games and activities and make some instruments from recycled or household materials. Classes are from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursdays at Surprise Elementary. The price of five weeks is $59. Summer Session 1 is Thursday through June 25. Summer Session 2 is July 9 through Aug. 6.

• Guitar Lessons: No prior guitar experience is required for this six-week class. Participants will learn the basics. All participants must provide their own guitar. Classes are from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays at Mountain View Elementary. The price of five weeks is $59. Summer Session 1 is tonight through June 24. Summer Session 2 is July 8 through Aug. 5.

• Jumping Gymnastics: Develop strength, flexibility and coordination while learning skills on the floor, bars, balance beam and vault. Jumpin’ Gymnastics uses positive reinforcement to help children increase social skills. Classes are Friday nights. Preschool, beginning and advanced classes available. $65 for 5 weeks. Summer Session 1is Friday through June 26 at Valley Vista High School. Summer Session 2: is July 10 through Aug. 7 at Canyon Ridge.

• Scrapbooking: This class will teach kids how to create mini albums, tag albums, picture cubes, and accordion albums. It meets from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Cimarron Springs Elementary. Ages 6 to 18 are welcome. Cost is $30 for 5 weeks, with a $40 supply fee due the first week of class. Summer Session 1 is tonight through June 24. Summer Session 2 is July 8 through Aug. 5.

• Shihon Martial Arts: With emphasis on discipline and respect, this class focuses on the sport of Karate, self-defense training, basic sparring techniques, safety awareness and the fundamentals of the correct execution of kicks, punches and blocks. Class meets from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays at Cimarron Springs Elementary. A five-week session is $38. Summer Session 1 is tonight through June 24. Summer Session 2 is July 8 through Aug. 5.

• Voice Lessons: This course is designed to enrich understanding of the vocal pedagogy necessary for healthy singing. This class will explore a variety of styles and genres of music, and the basic musical terminology necessary to understand the music at hand. Classes are from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays. The price of the five-week session is $30. Summer Session 1 is tonight through June 24. Summer Session 2 is July 8 through Aug. 5.

 

 

 

Wonderful World of Webkinz: Bring your Webkinz for a 1 hour class full of fun projects and activities! These exciting activities will emphasize skills in writing, computers, math and socialization. Must provide your own Webkinz. $20 for 5 weeks. Classes held Wednesdays for 2nd through 6th grades. Summer Session 1: 5/27/09 – 6/24/09 @ Valley Vista H.S. Summer Session 2: 7/8/09 – 8/5/09 @ Willow Canyon H.S.
